To make the urgent request seem legitimate, the caller cleverly provided corroborating details. He mentioned that a lawyer named Martin Zelner was handling the legal aspects of the acquisition and informed the manager that emails from this lawyer, pertaining to the transaction, would already be in his inbox. The manager found these emails, which appeared to validate the acquisition story and the need for the funds transfer.
Trusting the combination of the recognized voice, the plausible business scenario, the urgency communicated, and the seemingly legitimate emails from the supposed lawyer, the bank manager felt confident in the request's authenticity. Consequently, the manager authorized the $35 million transfer according to the instructions provided during the phone call. The fraudsters had successfully used deepvoice technology to bypass the manager's natural voice recognition.
The fraud was discovered only after the funds had been successfully transferred out of the bank. Subsequent investigations by U.A.E. authorities revealed the complexity of the scheme, estimating that at least 17 individuals were involved in orchestrating the heist. The $35 million was rapidly moved and dispersed across numerous bank accounts globally, significantly complicating recovery efforts.
